Speaking on the NTE Summit Panel 2

I spoke on a panel at the Night Time Economy Summit alongside representatives from the hospitality sector, the Greater Manchester Combined Authority, and the West Midlands Combined Authority.

The Summit was a well-attended event overall, with a strong programme during the day and great acts in the evening.

Our panel had a productive discussion about the challenges facing the nighttime economy. The general view among panellists was that small businesses are struggling and there is no single cause.

While people recognise that business rates, other taxes and rising rents are part of the problem, businesses are also facing high utility costs, particularly for water and energy. There are also pressures on customers, including the cost of travel to venues and wider increases in the cost of living.

Together, these pressures are creating a significant squeeze on small businesses and the nighttime economy.

During the discussion I raised the issues affecting small businesses in Norwich and explained how these reflect the wider national picture.

I will work with the Night Time Industries Association and local night‑time economy businesses to set up a Norwich association. This could give the sector a direct voice with the soon to be established unitary local authority and make sure local experience and concerns shape decisions from day one.
