I join the ‘Friends Against Scams’ campaign

September 13, 2016

I’m pleased to be joining forces with Chartered Trading Standards Institute and the National Trading Standards Scam Team to become a #Scambassador.

I’ll be making my constituents aware of the massive financial and emotional detriment that results from mass marketing scams – and most importantly how to avoid them.

Sadly, Norwich has been highlighted as a scamming hotspot: 77 people in the area were affected by scams between January and March 2016 – losing an average of £1,814 each. However, 95% of scams go unreported. It’s therefore important to let people know what scams are out there and how to flag them up and get help if they are hit by one.

Investigation uncovers charity wristband sellers operating without licence

September 16, 2016

Norwich Evening News investigation has uncovered more evidence of wristband sellers operating without a licence, raising yet more concerns about the regulation of charity street collectors in the city centre.

Some of my thoughts on this issue can be read in their article, and my full comment is as follows:

“According to the Chartered Trading Standards Institute, Norwich is now one of the ten most likely in the country for people to be ripped off in an organised scam of one kind or other. That’s one of the reasons I’ve teamed up with the Institute to become a #Scambassador for the city to raise awareness of how you can avoid becoming a victim too.

It’s heartbreaking that local people who want to do good by donating to an on-street charity collection sometimes end up being ripped off. On-street collections need a licence from the City Council and Trading Standards at the County Council are responsible for taking action against unscrupulous collectors. If you are at all unsure about a collection, please don’t donate and get in contact with the County or City Council. The action they can take will help maintain our trust in the legitimate charities we all donate to in order to help others.”
