I recently wrote to the Prime Minister, together with Members of the Cuba APPG, regarding his response to the US bombardment of Venezuela.
When asked pressed on whether the UK would treat a US bombardment of Cuba and the abduction of its leadership, mirroring recent events in Venezuela, as a “red line”, he refused to answer. This ambiguity is unacceptable.
The US actions in Venezuela constitute a flagrant breach of the UN Charter, specifically Article 2(4) regarding the prohibition of the use of force and the violation of state sovereignty. These are not political disagreements; they are illegal acts of aggression.
By failing to rule out support for identical actions against Cuba, particularly considering Secretary of State Rubio’s explicit threats on 4 January 2026, the UK Government is effectively signalling that it views international law as optional when applied to our allies. This stance emboldens further escalation and endangers international stability.
We asked for a direct clarification of the UK’s position:
• Does His Majesty’s Government recognise the US military action in Venezuela as a violation of the UN Charter?
• Will the Prime Minister explicitly rule out UK support or acquiescence for a similar military assault on Cuba?
