I have written to the government to pass on the concerns of Norwich South constituents, who have contacted me to voice their worries about the proposed immigration changes including around Indefinite Leave to Remain (‘ILR’) and the ‘earned settlement’ model.

They have told me about the potential impact on their lives, and the lives of their families. Some are concerned about how any retrospective increase in the ILR qualification period would create instability for their future – the same future that was planned based on the expectation that they would be eligible for ILR on the 5-year route. Constituents have also voiced concern that the ‘contribution-based’ model creates a profound inequity, particularly for retired spouses, carers, and stay-at-home parents of UK citizens.

These changes are currently under consultation, and I will be scrutinising any confirmed changes closely.
