I am proud to support a cross-party initiative calling for stronger measures to end to the use of confinement cages and crates in farming.

Every year, millions of farmed animals endure unnecessary suffering in these systems. Around 8 million hens are kept in cages no larger than an A4 sheet of paper, and thousands of pigs are confined in farrowing crates, unable to move freely.

The UK should lead the way in animal welfare, yet progress has been slow compared to other countries.

That’s why I’ve joined MPs from across parties to write to the Government urging a time-bound phase-out of all confinement cages and a comprehensive support package to help farmers transition to higher-welfare systems.

Ending these practices is not only humane but widely supported by the public and professionals. Together, we can deliver meaningful change and uphold the highest standards of care for animals.
