This week I hosted a parliamentary event with UNISON about the proposed changes to Personal Independence Payment (PIP). MPs and their staff were invited to hear from union officers and disabled members about how these changes will negatively affect disabled workers.
In representing representing thousands of disabled public service workers, UNISON brings a unique and direct perspective. The message could not have been clearer: that UNISON members have serious concerns about the impact of the proposed changes, which could inadvertently push some part-time disabled workers into full-time roles, simply to compensate for the loss of PIP support.
For many, this would be unsustainable, potentially leading to burnout, withdrawal from the workforce, and greater reliance on other benefits. Rather than reducing expenditure, the Government’s plans risk increasing costs and undermining its own policy objectives.
UNISON is urging MPs not to support any changes to PIP eligibility that would leave disabled workers less able to undertake meaningful employment.
The social security cuts proposed by the Government are not proposals I can support.
