This week I hosted the ‘Cost of Water’ drop-in event in Parliament.

Over 80 Sympathetic MPs poured into the event. Many shared sewage horror stories that were blighting their own constituencies.

The rotten stench of water mismanagement by private companies is inescapable.

I co-hosted the event with We Own It, and some of the grassroots campaign groups advocating around specific water pollution crises in their areas – Henley Mermaids, Windrush WASP, Ilkley Clean River, and Save Windermere. Campaigning legend Feargal Sharkey also came by to show his support.

These campaigners have unified around three asks:

1. Stop illegal pollution
2. Remove failing water companies’ licenses
3. No more bill rises until water companies are operating within the law

This campaign has momentum and I believe we can win significant change if we keep pushing. It’s only worked so far because of the pressure coming from people all over the country.

We’re up against huge private interests with big pockets and they don’t want to give up life on easy street. I will kepe on pushing this issue in Parliament.
