Today, I could not have been more pleased to vote for the Great British Energy Bill. This is a landmark piece of legislation. The Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero Ed Miliband and his team deserve enormous credit for this bill, and how quickly they have got to the hard work of scaling up climate action since July.
His department has become a shining beacon of hope as to what’s possible from this Labour government, and a stark contrast to the climate denialism and ineptitude of the previous government.
GB Energy is a bold measure. It is one that will ensure safety: through securing our energy supply from volatile and extractive fossil fuel markets; through promoting public health, which comes through phasing our polluting fossil fuels; through reducing the extremity of climate impacts by cutting carbon emissions.
If a bold GB Energy is established, and renewables are built at scale and pace, we will play our part in making the world a safer place.
Compare and contrast that with parties of the far right like Reform. As the exchange between the Secretary of State and the MP for Boston & Skegness Richard Tice earlier this week revealed, they oppose the rollout of renewables, and favour continued reliance on Russian and Saudi oil and international volatile markets.
Why? Because parties like Reform and the far right thrive on economic chaos and insecurity, on misery and on political and economic instability. No wonder they oppose this bill, which would turbocharge – in the hands of the public – the renewables revolution.
