Today in Parliament I raised a point of order raising concerns regarding Shell’s potential sale of its Nigerian subsidiary, SPDC.

For decades, Shell has made billions through drilling for oil and gas in Nigeria, leaving significant human and environmental destruction behind.

In 2012, 16,000 infants were estimated to have died as a result of exposure to oil spills. One recent report described Bayelsa state in Nigeria as being “in the grip of a human and environmental catastrophe of unimaginable proportions”.

Shell has announced it is trying to sell off its Nigerian subsidiary, which has raised concern that the UK-based oil giant is trying to wash its hands of the destruction it has caused in the Niger Delta.

In the coming days and weeks, I will be calling for the Government to step up and investigate Shell’s actions.

We can’t allow these corporations to plunder and pollute countries in the Global South, and then walk away without consequences. The Government must hold Shell to account.
