Local press asked for my reaction to the Tory government claim they’ll inject millions of pounds of funding into upgrading the Ely rail junction.

Here’s what I said:

“Can anyone believe anything Rishi Sunak and his rag bag of desperate opportunists say anymore?

For years, they claimed high-speed rail was essential to so-called levelling up and meeting carbon reduction targets.

Then, they pretended they could simultaneously hit those targets and open a massive new oilfield at the same time.

Next, they pulled the plug on funding for high-speed rail and earmarked the majority of the cash for roads, which would obviously increase carbon emissions.

Finally, they say don’t hold us to any of that; we’ve no idea what we’re actually going to do after all.

As far as the East goes, upgrading the Ely junction has been essential for years. We won’t get freight and private motorists off the road without serious upgrades like that to our regional rail infrastructure. But who knows what Rishi and the Tories will say about it by the end of the week?”
