I spoke with and listened to Amazon warehouse workers, who came to Parliament this week.
These workers shared with me their stories about the harsh conditions at Amazon. It hit home that dystopian realities are not an abstract imagined future, but the lived experiences of so many workers right now.
Workers told me about the extreme conditions they are subjected to. They work under near constant surveillance and are monitored by unaccountable algorithms. The workers I spoke to told me they felt that it doesn’t matter how hard they work, it’s just never enough.
At the moment, Amazon is fighting these workers in their attempts to unionise. Amazon prevents union material from being in the building, and workers are actively discouraged from talking about the union.
This is a highly polished system of workplace suppression that has been tried and tested in the USA.
I am fully behind Amazon workers in their fight for union recognition, fair pay, and good working conditions.
