My appearance at the environmental audit committee
My appearance at the environmental audit committee

This week the Environmental Audit Committee, of which I am a member, held the first session of our inquiry into environmental change and food security.

This was an inquiry I initiated, and was pleased that the Committee accepted my proposal to look into this area.

The reason I pursued this inquiry was to draw Parliamentary attention to the effects that climate change will have on food security, and to audit the Government’s policies and programmes in relation to achieving Sustainable Development Goal 2, to “end hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition, and promote sustainable agriculture”.

Over the course of the inquiry we will examine expert witnesses about the exposure of food supply chains to the effects of climate change, scientific advancements in creating potential low-carbon food sources, and the adequacy of existing Government programmes and policies to promote food security in both a domestic and global context.
