The Conservative government has announced it will block the Gender Recognition Reform (Scotland) Bill.

The first thing to say is this is wrong and an attack on trans rights. Trans rights are human rights and this Government has repeatedly demonstrated that it respects neither.

Secondly, the use of the Section 35 order is an attack on devolution and the Scottish Parliament and its people’s ability to govern themselves within the wider polity of the UK.

I imagine the Scottish government will challenge this in the courts, and I wish them every success.

This action has demonstrated the feudal nature of our limited democracy and the constitutional absurdity called the ‘Crown in Parliament’, which ultimately means Westminster can do what it likes.

For those of you who consider yourself progressives and yet find yourself cheering on the UK government’s decision, perhaps it is time to look around and see who your fellow travellers are on this issue?

Ultimately, it is an authoritarian, migrant hating, hard right government hell-bent on destroying our democracy and workers’ rights.

Is this really the side you want to align yourself with? From the conversations I’ve had with some of you, I really do not think that is the case.
