Everyone in Norwich relies on services provided by our two local councils. Despite over a decade of central government-imposed cuts, Labour-run Norwich City Council has still managed to provide award-winning services. Imagine just how much more they could do with a central government that supported local councils instead of starving them of resources.

Since the Tories came to power, they’ve relentlessly slashed almost all core funding for the City. Norwich City Council is one of the top 15 councils hardest cut by central government. But yet again, this government are doing nothing to prevent a lousy situation getting even worse.

Councils and the tens of thousands of people they serve are being hammered by 10 percent-plus inflation. Allowing councils to raise Council Tax by 5% won’t even cover that. Giving councils no choice but to hike one of the most regressive taxes will hit hard thousands of working people in our City at the worst possible time.

Five per cent will do nothing to restore the plethora of local services slashed since 2010. Adult and Children’s Services are already in crisis in Norfolk and were already in the firing line for cuts of well over £10million even before last week’s chocolate teapot of a Statement.

As I said today in parliament, when you cut social care, it’s the NHS which bleeds. And that’s the last thing we need after recent revelations that Norfolk is now one of just 10 areas nationwide where health and social care is at risk of “systemic failure” over the coming months.
