As a member of the Environmental Audit Committee, I am involved in regular inquiries that consider the extent to which the policies and programmes of government departments and non-departmental public bodies contribute to environmental protection and sustainable development, and to audit their performance against sustainable development and environmental protection targets.

An evidence session was held this week as part of the inquiry into ‘Accelerating the transition from fossil fuels and securing energy supplies‘.

The very same week we have seen record breaking temperatures in the UK, I had the chance to ask representatives from fossil fuel companies – including from BP and Shell – what they thought about moves to create a new crime of ecocide, which could see oil and gas executives tried at the Hague for their role in climate breakdown and ecological collapse.
