We are in the midst of a crisis of democracy. The First Past the Post system we use in General Elections means that millions of people’s votes are wasted. It’s also a system that massively benefits this Government. So the news that the FPTP system will be introduced for all local mayoral, and police and crime commissioner elections is deeply disturbing.
This comes just days after the Elections Bill was debated in Parliament, which will see voter ID introduced. This move is estimated to exclude the 2.1 million people who do not have a form of recognisable photo ID from voting.
This Government are pouring oil on the bonfire of democracy that is taking place not just in the UK, but across the world.
