On Monday evening I had the absolute pleasure of speaking to a packed room of Labour Party members and supporters in Parliament, for the latest in our series of ‘Love Socialism, Hate Brexit’ rallies.
Over the past months, Westminster has become an increasingly scary and depressing place to be, as we have been paralysed by indecision – from across the political spectrum – on how to progress with Brexit.
This event on Monday symbolised true progress, as the founding members of Love Socialism, Hate Brexit were joined by so many wonderful speakers from the shadow cabinet – including Diane Abbott MP, EmilyThornberry , Keir Starmer, Dawn Butler, Jon Ashworth, and a statement from John McDonnell.
There was an overwhelming message of solidarity and hope that came from the meeting, and it is clear that there is a true commitment from the Labour Party to commit to a public vote in any and all circumstances, with Remain on the ballot paper – and the Labour Party campaigning to Remain.
I can’t help but think that things are set to get more toxic and divisive over the coming months, and that is the last thing that our divided country needs. Therefore, I fundamentally believe that our role as a socialist party is to scream and shout from the rooftops why it is that we so desperately need that socialism.
We are about to have the fight of our lives.
