Today I virtually participated in the House of Commons debate on the Budget. I wanted to see the Chancellor taking the public’s lead, with a transformatory budget that built on the growing consensus for a fairer and greener Britain.
Rishi Sunak could have invested in our local authorities and public services. He could have raised Statutory Sick Pay so that becoming ill will never sentence you to debt or destitution. He could have stepped in to forgive the debt that is crippling renters and students. He could have introduced funding for Universal Basic Income and Services, to create a strong social safety net that catches everyone. He could have initiated a major programme of decarbonisation and ecological renewal.
We got none of that from this Government and its Chancellor. They have nothing of worth to say about the future of this country.
