Labour-led Norwich City Council has announced it will donate £10,000 to charitable causes who are helping to feed hungry children. This is in response to the Tory government’s refusal to carry on providing free school meals for those who need them during school holidays.
Once again, our local Labour council is picking up the pieces and going above and beyond to support those in our city the Tories are failing. It’s not Norwich City Council’s responsibility to provide this service, and this comes at a time where councils are under severe financial pressure due to lack of government funding: but it’s clearly the right thing to do.
The strength of feeling about this is abundantly clear from the outpouring on social media, the number of emails I have recieved on this issue and from protests such as the plates demonstration outside the Conservative HQ in Norwich North (pictured). At least one Norfolk Conservative MP has now U-turned to acknowledge this and has called on colleagues to rethink their callous decision. I hope more will follow suit.
