Doctor's plea for snorkling masks exposes lack of coronavirus protection
A Norfolk hospital doctor, blew the whistle to me about the lack of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and how they had to ask a relative abroad to send them PPE as they did not have confidence in their hospital getting them the right type quickly enough. This is the EDP report on that story and below is the full comment I gave to the paper.
This government’s failure to provide PPE for health, social care and other frontline staff is becoming a national scandal, as is the lack of systematic testing of workers like these. As I say in the article about the lack of PPE, we’re almost two months into this epidemic; where the bloody hell are these tests and that protective equipment Boris Johnson keeps promising us?
This PPE saga has become like Waiting for Godot. Government ministers and senior NHS managers keep saying there’s no problem, they’ve got the equipment that’s needed and the supplies are coming through. So why are frontline health and care staff still contacting my office daily with terrifying and heartrending stories like these?
This week Boris Johnson is sending a letter to every household in the country claiming his government has put into place the right measures at the right time. That’s certainly not true for supplies of PPE here. We’re almost two months into this epidemic and I have a very simple question for Johnson. Where the bloody hell is this personal protective equipment you keep promising us?”
