Let’s call this what it is: a hate crime.
This anonymous message was intended to intimidate and create an atmosphere of mistrust and suspicion in this community and beyond.
Those of us who live in Norwich know such sentiment here is thankfully rare. Norwich is an overwhelmingly supportive, tolerant and welcoming city and one we are rightly proud of. However, we can not and will not take that situation for granted.
If acts like this, and worse, become normalised – the small minority of racists and bigots amongst us will become ever more emboldened. Racism must, now more than ever, be challenged and victims supported.
As any student of history will know, failure to do so can have dire consequences for all of us.
