To commemorate National Stephen Lawrence Day, The Voice Newspaper asked me for my thoughts on what the day means for the country in 2024.
My quote reads as follows:
“Stephen’s legacy is a work in progress. I say that because we now understand that whilst identifying the police as ‘institutionally racist’ was correct, we have, as a country, failed to grasp how structural racism pervades every aspect of social, political and economic life.”
“Indeed, there’s now a growing movement in this country that is not only in denial of this reality but actually embraces it.”
“Until we unpack and deal with that as a country – his legacy will always be a work in progress.”
