Ahead of the Spring Budget, I’ve joined a cross-party group of 19 Parliamentarians, writing to the Chancellor urging him to scale up public investment to decarbonise the UK economy.

I urge the Chancellor to prioritise public spending on health, education and tackling the climate crisis ahead of tax cuts. Investing in a liveable planet will make homes and communities more pleasant places for all of us, reviving our economy in the process.

Written by Caroline Lucas MP, the letter asks the Chancellor to do the following:

    • Use the forthcoming Budget to prioritise new public investment in the infrastructure and skills needed for the transition beyond fossil fuels.
    • Publish a Net Zero Investment Plan to identify and close the gap between actual and required financial flows, as recommended in the Independent Review of Net Zero in 2023.
    • Work with Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) colleagues to set out a plan to end fuel poverty and improve our energy security by ensuring every household has access to energy efficiency measures and fossil-free heat via a combination of grants and low-cost loans.
