I look at Europe, the rise of global fascism, Trump and the new science on bio-diversity and Climate Change global emergency and I’m filled with horror the left could ever turn its back on Europe.
We need to be fighting to change Europe, not walk away from it. You can not influence Europe outside of it. Anyone that believes that is deluded. Real solidarity means staying in and fighting with our socialist comrades and smashing neo-liberal Europe and rebuilding a social Europe.
No matter who wins the next US presidency, the US is shifting away from Europe, away from shared post-war global institutions. Some of them we should say good riddance to. But not all. That means we must do all we can to shape EU institutions and build alliances with parts of the world that want to deal humanely with migration, human rights, AI, mega-corps, tax-evasion, human genome editing, the super-rich, food security and tackling climate change.
The world of 2016 that gave the referendum is so,so different from the nightmare world we are now fast approaching. It’s almost a different question. As for Party policy on the way out of this. It is correct. The sequence is logical and correct for now. There is no inconsistency in my logic. I welcome those who campaign for a PV. They’re making the necessary political space for what maybe a political necessity given the current Parliamentary deadlock.
What I do know is that walking off a cliff edge to appease racists and fascists and ‘protect our democracy’ is a fallacy. They will simply be emboldened and capitalise on what will be a strategic level mistake of epic proportions.
