I have written to the Chair of the Equality and Human Rights Commission, asking for the consultation on changes to the Code of Practice to be extended to a minimum of 12 weeks.
The Code of Practice is being changed in response to the Supreme Court’s judgement of 16th April 2025 in For Women Scotland Vs Scottish Ministers.
My letter reflects concerns raised by the human rights and civil liberties organisation, Liberty, which has launched legal action against the EHRC. Liberty claims the Commission is breaching its statutory duty by “trying to speed through sweeping changes”.
As Liberty’s Director, Akiko Hart, has said: “It is a fundamental part of our democracy that we are all given a fair opportunity to make our voices heard about any decision that impacts us.”
