Clive Lewis For Norwich South
Today in Parliament I delivered my speech in response to the legislative agenda set out by the Government in the King’s Speech.
I told the House that the marginality of this Parliament, along with the rising spectre of right-wing authoritarianism, means that the Government should legislate as if it were only to be in power for a single term. That’s because this Labour government could easily be followed by one that has little respect for democracy, tolerance, or human rights.
I added that in this age of anger and permacrisis, policy delivery is no longer enough; transformative change, empowerment, and new institutions that can future-proof society against what is to come are what’s needed.
We don’t have to look far to see this in action. The NHS, an institution that is the closest thing we have to socialism in the UK, is one of the reasons why many are proud to be British.
I also called for the Government to rebuild our local authorities and strengthen trade unions to push power back to people in the workplace.
