Today I spoke at an event hosted by the English Labour Network regarding the Report of the Commission on the UK’s Future and its plans with devolution.
I emphasised the importance of the Commission’s recommendation of abolishing the House of Lords, but what it is replaced with is key to the future of the UK.
If this new second chamber is elected with First Past the Post, we grant ourselves the same fate we face today, a Conservative party that benefits disproportionately from the UK’s rigged electoral system.
Without proportional representation, the structure of the new second chamber will not offer anything different.
Deepening and strengthening the UK’s democracy is a key area of focus of my work in Parliament.
