Last week, I hosted an extremely well attended public event in Parliament about BBC Reform with the Media Reform Coalition.
Over the last three decades I believe that the BBC’s independence has slowly been diminished, its programme making increasingly commercialised, and its editorial culture increasingly conservative. Speaking alongside Zoe Williams of the Guardian and others, we focused on how we can radically reform the BBC into a modern, democratic public platform, independent of both the market and the government.
I hope that this great event helps to kick-start public debate about the measures necessary to secure a revamped and truly independent BBC, that means the broadcaster can live up to its core values and meet the challenges of 21st century media and politics. Watch this space!
