The Government has supported the fossil fuel industry to the tune of £10 billion a year, and asked if Octopus Energy would like similar support

In today’s session of the Environmental Audit Committee, I asked Rachel Fletcher, the Director for Regulations and Economics at Octopus Energy, whether she believed that the Government should be investing more into the development of new technologies to enable sustainable electrification of the UK economy.

I raised evidence from the House of Lords Library which states that through tax breaks and subsidies the Government has supported the fossil fuel industry to the tune of £10 billion a year, and asked if Octopus Energy would like similar support.

Rachel told the Committee that Octopus hasn’t received any financial support from the Government, and that the difference in investment between the two industries is stark. She also raised the Government’s commitment to Carbon Capture and Storage as problematic.

Watch the full session here, my questioning begins at 15:14:20.
