My quote in the Evening News on Universal Credit

The Evening News are reporting on "the disaster waiting to happen" the introduction of Universal Credit in Norwich is likely to be. I was asked to comment and you can read below what I said.

“Never has the expression that we’re all only a few pay cheques from penury been so true. Under the Tories, employment insecurity has soared. Increasing numbers of people don’t know from one week to the next, how much they’ll get in their pay packet and even whether they’ll have work at all

And now the government’s botched Universal Credit programme is turning into a nightmare for the increasing numbers of people who rely on it in our city.

Citizen’s Advice say Universal Credit is increasing debt among low income families putting them at greater risk of eviction, visits from bailiffs, being cut off from energy supplies and even prison.

This government has chosen to offer tax handouts to the very wealthy few and large corporations rather than a hand up to the many of us who deserve a decent welfare system, there for us all in our time of need.

The government must immediately halt the roll out of Universal Credit to contain the misery being caused by the disastrous mishandling of this programme.

And it’s because Labour understands how vital a well run and well resourced social security system is to all of us, that we’ve plan to set aside £10bn for reform of the social security system, including transforming Universal Credit.”
