According to the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) research, over 95% of OECD member countries have higher standards of employment protection than Great Britain. If those 35 nations can do that and prosper, there’s no reason we can’t do it here as well.
And with nearly three-quarters of people polled for the TUC saying the government must protect and enhance workplace rights, it’s crystal clear that’s what we overwhelmingly want. But the UK is becoming a worse rather than a better place to go to work.
Almost a quarter of people surveyed report they’ve lost pay or hours over the last couple of years. 1 in 10 workers have been ‘Fired and Rehired’, told to re-apply for their jobs on worse terms and conditions or face the sack. Yet again, it’s young, black and female workers hit hardest. It’s not just employees’ bank balances that suffer. Research shows low-paid, precarious work damages mental and physical health even more than unemployment.
It’s going to take long-term systemic change to transform the economy so people can finally work to live, not just live to work. But we can take a big step forward by preventing people from being forced to re-apply for their jobs on worse terms and conditions. That’s one of the reasons why I’m joining MPs from my own party and others to try and outlaw ‘Fire and Rehire’.
